The Visit of the Magi
Matthew 2:1-12 recounts the visit of the Magi, or Wise Men, to Bethlehem following the appearance of a star that signified the birth of the King of the Jews. These learned men from the East traveled to Jerusalem to inquire about the newborn king, causing King Herod and the city to be troubled. Herod consulted the chief priests and scribes, who pointed to Bethlehem as the prophesied birthplace of the Messiah. The Magi continued their journey and, guided by the star, found Mary, Joseph, and the infant Jesus. Overwhelmed with joy and reverence, they presented gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the child. In a dream, they were warned not to return to Herod, and, heeding the divine message, they departed by a different route, avoiding Herod’s sinister intentions.
Drawn to Christ
This passage underscores the universal significance of Jesus’ birth, as the Magi, representing Gentile nations, travel from afar to pay homage to the newborn King. The visitation of the Magi fulfills the prophetic expectation that kings from distant lands would come bearing gifts. The connection of the Magi’s worship and Herod’s deceitful intentions foreshadows the contrasting responses to Jesus throughout His life. The Magi’s journey is a symbol of seekers from all nations who are drawn to Christ, emphasizing the inclusive nature of God’s redemptive plan through Jesus.

In this season of Advent, may the inclusive message of the Magi’s visit remind us of your boundless love for all nations, and may our worship be a fragrant offering, like the precious gifts laid at the feet of the newborn Savior. We ask all this in the name of you Son, Jesus, Amen.
