Mary and Gabriel

Preparing for Christ Part 2 [Luke 1:26 – 38]

A Visit from Gabriel

Luke 1:26-38 recounts the angel Gabriel’s visit to Mary, a young virgin engaged to Joseph. Gabriel brings a divine message, informing Mary that she has found favor with God and will conceive a son by the Holy Spirit. This child, named Jesus, is foretold to be the Son of the Most High and the fulfillment of the long-awaited promise of a Messiah. Mary, although initially perplexed and questioning the feasibility of such an occurrence, humbly accepts her role in God’s plan, responding with faith and surrender, saying, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”

Mary’s Obedience

This passage is pivotal in the biblical narrative as it marks the Annunciation, the moment when God’s redemptive plan takes a decisive step forward through Mary’s willing acceptance of her role in the incarnation of Jesus. Mary’s response exemplifies profound humility and trust, demonstrating a model of faith for believers. The passage underscores the divine initiative in bringing about salvation and highlights the importance of human cooperation with God’s will. It sets the stage for the miraculous birth of Jesus, emphasizing the divine intervention that transcends human understanding and the role of ordinary individuals in God’s extraordinary plan of redemption.

Questions to Ponder

  1. What qualities or characteristics of Mary stand out in this passage?
  2. In what ways can we apply Mary’s attitude of surrender and obedience to our own lives?

Let’s Pray:

Gracious God, as we reflect on the profound moment of the Annunciation to Mary, we come before You with hearts filled with awe and gratitude. We thank You for the example of Mary, a young woman who, in humility and faith, embraced the extraordinary role you had chosen for her in bringing forth the Savior of the world. Like Mary, may we find favor in Your sight, recognizing that Your divine plans often unfold in unexpected ways.

As we journey through this Advent season, preparing our hearts for the celebration of the birth of Jesus, grant us the grace to respond to Your call with the same trust and surrender that Mary displayed. May we, too, be willing vessels for Your purposes, open to the miraculous and transformative power of Your Word. In the midst of our anticipation, help us to cultivate a spirit of humility, acknowledging that, like Mary, we are servants of Your will. We pray for the light of Christ to shine brightly in our lives, dispelling darkness and guiding us ever closer to the joyous revelation of Your redemptive love. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
