Welcoming the King: Meditations for Holy Monday
As we continue our journey of Holy Week, let’s focus on the sacred pilgrimage, a day that echoes with the anticipation and excitement surrounding Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem. It is a moment charged with symbolism, as Jesus enters the city riding on a donkey, fulfilling ancient prophecies and receiving cries of “Hosanna” from the crowd. In the midst of the bustling city streets, we find ourselves drawn into the unfolding drama of Jesus’ triumphal entry, invited to contemplate the deeper meanings embedded within this pivotal moment in history.
Matthew 21:7-9 – They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
The Triumphal Entry: In Matthew 21:7-9, we encounter the familiar scene of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. As Jesus approaches the city, He instructs His disciples to bring Him a donkey and its colt, fulfilling the prophecy spoken by the prophet Zechariah: “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey'” (Zechariah 9:9). This deliberate act of humility and symbolism underscores Jesus’ identity as the long-awaited Messiah, but His kingdom is very different from what people expected.
As Jesus rides into Jerusalem, the crowds gather around Him, spreading their cloaks on the road and cutting branches from the trees to pave His way. Their shouts of “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!” reflect their recognition of Jesus as the promised deliverer and king (Matthew 21:9). Yet, beneath the surface of celebration lies a profound tension, as the people’s expectations of Jesus clash with His true mission and purpose.

In the triumphal entry, we find a mix of humility and exaltation, as Jesus, the King of kings, enters Jerusalem not in regal splendor but in meekness and humility. This act serves as a powerful reminder of the upside-down nature of God’s kingdom – Greatness is found in servanthood and Power is demonstrated through self-sacrifice. As we meditate on this scene, may we be challenged to embrace the humility of our Savior and welcome Him as the true King of our lives.
Understanding the Scene: Historical and Symbolic Context
To fully grasp the significance of Jesus’ grand entry into Jerusalem, it’s essential to consider both the historical and symbolic context surrounding this event.
Historically, Jerusalem was a city buzzing with religious and political tension, especially during the time of Passover when Jewish pilgrims flocked to the city to celebrate their deliverance from slavery in Egypt. The arrival of Jesus, hailed as a prophet and healer throughout the region, would have undoubtedly stirred anticipation and excitement among the crowds.
Symbolically, Jesus’ choice to enter Jerusalem riding on a donkey held profound significance. In ancient Near Eastern cultures, a king riding on a horse was about demontrating their power. However, riding on a donkey symbolized humility and peace, contrasting with the imagery of a conquering king . By deliberately fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9, Jesus showed that He was the long-awaited Messiah, but He did it in a way that surprised everyone. He didn’t act like a typical king or ruler. His mode of entry proclaimed a message of peace and reconciliation, offering Himself as the humble servant king who would ultimately bring salvation to humanity.
Lessons for Today: Welcoming Jesus into Our Lives
As we reflect on the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, we are invited to consider how we welcome Jesus into our own lives. Just as the crowds eagerly greeted Jesus with shouts of “Hosanna,” we too are called to welcome Him as our King and Savior. Yet, our response to Jesus goes beyond mere words or outward expressions; it requires a heart willing to surrender to His lordship and embrace His teachings.
The cries of “Hosanna” signify more than just an acknowledgment of Jesus’ identity as the Messiah; they express a plea for salvation and deliverance. In our modern context, welcoming Jesus into our lives involves acknowledging our need for His saving grace and inviting Him to reign over every area of our hearts and minds. It means submitting our wills to His and allowing His love to transform us from the inside out.
As we journey through Holy Week, may we reflect on the ways we welcome Jesus into our lives each day. Are we willing to lay down our desires and ambitions at His feet, trusting in His plan and purpose for our lives? Are we prepared to follow Him with unwavering devotion, even when the path is difficult or uncertain? Let us open our hearts to receive Jesus anew, welcoming Him as our King and Savior, and embracing the abundant life He offers to all who believe in Him.

Application in Daily Life: Welcoming Jesus More Fully
As we meditate on the lessons from Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, we are compelled to consider practical ways to apply these truths to our daily lives. For busy women juggling multiple responsibilities and commitments, welcoming Jesus more fully requires intentional effort and a willingness to prioritize spiritual growth amidst life’s demands. Here are some practical suggestions for incorporating the lessons learned into our busy lives:
- Daily Prayer and Devotion: Set aside time each day for prayer and Bible study, even if it’s just a few minutes in the morning or before bed. Use this time to connect with God, seeking His guidance, wisdom, and presence in your life.
- Surrendering Control: Recognize the tendency to try to control every aspect of your life, and instead, surrender control to Jesus. Trust in His sovereignty and providence, knowing that He is working all things together for your good.
- Cultivating a Spirit of Gratitude: Practice gratitude by intentionally counting your blessings and thanking God for His faithfulness. Cultivating a spirit of gratitude helps shift your focus from what you lack to the abundance of blessings already present in your life.
- Setting Boundaries: Recognize the importance of setting healthy boundaries in your relationships and commitments. Learn to say no to activities or responsibilities that drain your energy and detract from your relationship with God.
- Fellowship and Community: Prioritize fellowship with other believers by attending church services, joining a small group, or participating in Bible studies. Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals provides encouragement, accountability, and support in your faith journey.
- Reflecting on Jesus’ Words and Actions: Take time to reflect on Jesus’ teachings and actions recorded in the Gospels. Consider how His words and example challenge and inspire you to live a life of faith, love, and obedience.
By incorporating these practices into your daily life, you can cultivate a deeper relationship with Jesus and welcome Him more fully into every aspect of your being. Remember that even small, intentional steps taken each day can lead to significant spiritual growth and transformation over time. As you seek to prioritize your relationship with Jesus amidst your busy schedule, may you experience His presence, peace, and power in profound ways.
