Be’s in the Bible – Praying Scripture in the Bible: May 20 is World Bee Day, and I thought it would be fun to explore 15 Bible verses that start with the word “Be”… with a little twist, of course! There are many ways to incorporate Bible journaling into your devotional time. One effective method is by writing out Scripture. Psalm 119:11 encourages us to “hide God’s Word in our heart.” Writing Bible verses helps us learn and memorize them, ensuring they are deeply rooted in our hearts.
In general, Bible verses that start with “Be” are intended to shape the character, attitudes, and actions of Christians. Therefore, they guide believers towards a life that reflects their faith in God. Additionally, these verses help believers stay dedicated to following Jesus Christ. These verses serve as reminders of God’s promises, commands, and the virtues that Christians are called to embody. Pick out a few and write these verses in your journal today.

“Be” Encouraged
Joshua 1:9
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
This verse is part of a conversation between God and Joshua, who succeeded Moses. As Joshua prepares to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land, it serves as a rallying cry. The verse reminds Joshua of God’s promise to always be with him. It also urges him to be strong and courageous in the face of challenges and uncertainties.
This “be” of the Bible is often used by believers when they encounter new challenges or struggle with fear and anxiety. I knew a woman who would write “Joshua 1:9” on her letters, social media posts, and cards, reminding the recipient that the Lord is always with them.
Romans 12:12
“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”
This verse is part of a larger passage in which the apostle Paul exhorts believers to live transformed lives, characterized by love, humility, and service to others. It is a concise and powerful directive that encapsulates key aspects of Christian faith and practice.
This verse is one I often cling to during challenging times. Although being patient in affliction isn’t easy, I can still find joy in hope and remain faithful in prayer. While difficulties are inevitable, how we respond to them ultimately reveals the source of our joy. This “Be” of the Bible reminds me to be joyful.
Psalm 31:24
“Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord.”
This verse provides comfort, strength, and encouragement to believers. It reminds them of the power of hope and trust in the Lord. It calls believers to rely on God’s strength and take heart in His promises. They are encouraged to remain steadfast in their faith, knowing that God is always with them. This verse continues to inspire and uplift, reminding believers of the hope and confidence they have in the Lord, even in the darkest times.
Deuteronomy 31:6
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
The verse concludes with the powerful promise of God’s unending presence: “For the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” In this promise, Moses assures the Israelites of God’s steadfast companionship through every challenge and victory they face. This assurance of divine presence provides a source of hope and security, empowering the Israelites to proceed with confidence and trust in God’s unwavering support.
I find great encouragement in knowing that God will never leave me or forsake me. This promise reassures me, especially when I feel alone or overwhelmed. It reminds me that, even in challenging times, I am never truly alone. This truth helps me stay strong in my faith, knowing that God’s constant presence offers support and peace. This is one way the “Be’s” of the Bible improve my faith.

“Be” Instructed
Psalm 46:10
“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
In this verse, the psalmist delivers a powerful message of trust, surrender, and reverence for God’s sovereignty. It encourages believers to embrace stillness and quiet confidence, acknowledging that God alone is sovereign and worthy of praise. This verse inspires and comforts, reminding believers of God’s unwavering faithfulness and His constant presence during life’s challenges and uncertainties.
Many people recognize the opening phrase of this verse, and it often appears in various forms of décor. You might come across it on wall art, posters, or inspirational prints displayed in homes, offices, and places of worship. Its popularity reflects its powerful message and the comfort it provides. It’s probably that my grandma had some kind of decoration with this phrase.
This familiar introduction has resonated with many, becoming a source of encouragement and reflection for countless individuals. The verse’s presence in everyday items highlights its significance and the way it continues to inspire and uplift people in their daily lives.
I Peter 5:2
“Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve.
In this verse, Peter addresses leaders within the Christian community, exhorting them to fulfill their roles as spiritual shepherds with humility, integrity, and genuine care for those entrusted to their oversight. This “Be” of the Bible is a strong reminder of what God calls us to do.
The imagery of shepherding evokes pastoral care and guidance. Leaders are responsible for the well-being and spiritual growth of the believers they oversee. It calls believers to embody a spirit of devotion, selflessness, and honor in their relationships with one another, reflecting the love and humility modeled by Jesus Christ. This verse serves as a timeless reminder of the importance of genuine love and mutual respect in building and nurturing healthy Christian relationships.
Ephesians 4:32
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
In this verse, Paul gives a clear and deep exhortation. He describes the attitudes and behaviors that should define relationships among believers. This guidance is meant to shape interactions within the Christian community.
It emphasizes the need to cultivate a culture of grace, reconciliation, and mutual support within the Christian community. This reflects the transformative impact of the gospel on our lives and relationships. The verse inspires and challenges believers to embody love, grace, and forgiveness. It highlights the reconciling work of Christ in our world.
As a child, one of the fundamental principles I frequently encountered was the notion of “Treat others the way you want to be treated.” It was more than just a guideline for behavior; it was a foundational ethic that shaped interactions and relationships.
I think it applies to this verse: “Be kind and compassionate to on another”. This “be” of the Bible is the idea is that by treating others with the same respect, compassion, and understanding that we would like for ourselves, we foster a more harmonious and supportive environment.

Psalm 37:7
“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.
In this verse, the psalmist imparts a timeless message of trust, patience, and confidence in God’s sovereignty and faithfulness. It calls believers to cultivate a spirit of stillness and quiet confidence in God’s presence, to wait patiently for His timing, and to trust in His justice and righteousness.
There have been many moments in my life when I questioned whether “the good guys finish last.” During these times, it was difficult to remain patient, especially when it seemed like the “bad guys” were coming out ahead. However, it was then that I realized the devil was trying to shake my faith. In those challenging moments, it’s easy to feel discouraged. Nevertheless, that’s precisely when we need to strengthen our resolve and remind ourselves “not to fret, but to wait patiently for God.” This “Be” of the Bible is foundational to my faith.
Colossians 4:5 “Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.”
In this verse, Paul offers practical guidance on how believers should interact with those outside the Christian community, emphasizing the importance of wisdom, discernment, and strategic engagement.
It reminds believers of their role as stewards of the gospel, called to shine the light of Christ in a world darkened by sin and unbelief. This verse continues to inspire and challenge believers to engage with the world around them with wisdom, grace, and boldness, sharing the love of Christ and making disciples of all nations.
I Peter 3:8
“Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.”
The verse then emphasizes the command to “love one another.” This fundamental principle lies at the heart of Christian ethics and serves as the hallmark of discipleship. Psalm 108:5
“Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth.”

It serves as a reminder of God’s greatness, sovereignty, and glory, inspiring believers to offer Him praise and honor with all their hearts. This verse continues to inspire and uplift believers, inviting them to join in the chorus of creation in proclaiming the greatness and majesty of God to the ends of the earth.
